Dream d1845-s: Sliver Over the Fork

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road bent away from Nettlesquare in the last light of evening, and by the time full dark settled, the walled town's lanterns had shrunk to a pale smudge behind us. The Weather Reader stopped once to look back, her barometer in her palm, checking the pressure against the memory of the place. Three days and a half we had stayed. She said the town breathed differently on departure. Not lighter, but more even.

We made camp on the verge where two holm oaks met overhead, their branches bare enough to show the stars. The Builder laid the fire. Lano circled twice and curled against my pack, her nose tucked under her tail, watching the flame with half-closed eyes. Rurik took himself to the edge of our firelight and sat facing the fork in the road, left branch toward Quillmoss, right branch toward something none of us had named yet. His amber eyes held still on whatever the dark offered.

"The south gate lintel," the Builder said, stirring the coals. "I'm glad we pointed it out when we did." She said it without drama, the way she always named a structural finding, a fact that had wanted speaking aloud.

"The mason already knew," I said. "He only needed someone to stand under it with him long enough."

That was the shape of Nettlesquare, I thought. Not a place waiting to be fixed, but a place waiting to be stood inside with full attention. The Weather Reader had read three seasons of moisture in the thatch of the east-quarter rooftops. The Builder had traced every load-path in the granary. I had written it all in the book, which lay under my arm now, its cover cold from the night air.

Lano's ears pricked. Some sound from the dark toward Quillmoss, a nightbird or the wind through the overgrowth that had reclaimed the old walls. She settled again without alarm.

"What do you think we'll find?" the Weather Reader asked, not to anyone in particular.

I wrote the question in the margin of the last Nettlesquare page rather than answer it. Rurik sat perfectly still at the fork. A sliver of moon appeared between the oak branches, crossed the road slowly, and vanished into the tree line on the far side. The fire banked down to orange. Lano made a small sound in her sleep, and then was quiet.
