Dream d1847-s: Frost on the Last Page

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the morning was the color of old pewter and the frost had settled hard on everything - fence rails, the leaning sign at the crossroads, the bare stems of whatever had once been a kitchen garden against the south wall of the inn.

We gathered at the Caretaker's door before the light had properly established itself. She was already there, wrapped in two shawls, holding a clay cup in both hands. She looked at us the way people look at something they have decided to let go of: with a kind of deliberate peace.

"You read it true," she said to me, and I knew she meant the settlement, the ruin, the stubborn pulse of it.

I opened the book and wrote the last entry for Quillmoss in a hand steadier than I felt. The Builder leaned in to check the glyph I had drawn for the load-paths under the east granary - she had found the hidden competence in those beams, the old care that outlasted the builders themselves. "Include the joinery," she said quietly, and I did.

The Weather Reader was already reading the sky to the west, glass turned against the pale horizon. "Pressure rising," she said. "Dry ground, three days at least." She looked at the Caretaker. "Whoever comes after us will have fair weather for the work."

I finished the entry and closed the book.

Lano had been sitting by the gate the whole time, nose lifted, ears turned toward the open country beyond the settlement's last fence. Something in the distance held her attention - probably a bird, or the particular silence of open ground. Her tail moved once.

We said our farewells the way people do when they know better than to drag them out. The Caretaker pressed a small folded paper into my hand - a note for someone at the next place, she said, though she would not say who. I tucked it into the front cover of the book.

Rurik went first. He walked through the gate without looking back, tail low but steady, following whatever it was he followed when an open road appeared. After him came the Builder, pack high on her shoulders. The Weather Reader paused at the gate post for one last barometric mark - she had been recording them all through the stay, building a pressure portrait of Quillmoss to carry with us.

I went last.

The settlement at my back looked, for a moment, less abandoned than it had when we arrived. The granary stood plumb. The sign was straight. The Caretaker lifted one hand. I raised mine in return.

Then the grey country ahead, and Rurik's dark shape moving into it, and the frost still white on everything we left behind.
