Dream d1821-s: Hammer Past Nightfall

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I found the first footprints on the third evening.

They were pressed into the dust of Umberfold's main street - not ancient, weeks-old at most, perhaps less. Lano found them first, nose skimming the stone, her tail gone still. She stood over a partial boot-print beside the cooperage and looked back at me. I crouched and measured the stride with my hand. Someone had walked this street purposefully, recently, and not in the manner of a passing traveler.

"There," the Builder said, coming up beside me. She had her measuring cord out, habit of hers whenever she stood near any structure. She pointed past the cooperage to a half-finished frame at the lane's end, fresh-cut timber still pale at its joints. "That wasn't standing yesterday."

We had heard hammers the two previous evenings and assumed it was the mill. It wasn't the mill. The Builder walked the sound back to its source and returned with her notebook open. The work was going on inside the long hall behind the granary, voices underneath the hammer-blows, someone calling measurements, someone else repeating them back. Umberfold was building, and building seriously, in the dark.

Rurik led us to the edge of the village before the last light left the sky. He paused at a low wooden post planted in open ground, amber eyes on something ahead. The ground past it was marked: a line of stakes at regular intervals, a target-shape hung on a frame fifty paces out. The grass between the post and the target was short, pressed flat, worn in a line. Measured paces. Whatever they were practicing here, they had been at it often enough to leave a path.

The Weather Reader set her barometer on a flat stone and read the dial. "Pressure's been rising since we arrived," she said. "Three days of steady climb. This place isn't settling - it's tightening."

I wrote that down.

On the way back through the mill yard, we stopped at the waterwheel. It turned without any grain running through - the sluice gate was open just enough to keep it moving. As each paddle cleared the water, a lever on the axle arm flicked a small wooden counter. It was tallying itself. Someone had rigged it to count its own rotations, to test its own cadence, to learn its own rhythm before trusting it with load.

I opened the book of readings to a fresh page and drew a line down the center. On one side: what Umberfold shows. On the other: what it is actually doing.

The two columns were not the same.

Lano settled beside me on the mill-yard stones, chin on her paws. "¿Entiendes?" I asked her quietly. She did not answer, being a dog, but her ears stayed up.
