Dream d1820-s: Chalk and Brook and Wick

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the fog had not lifted when we took our first proper walk through Umberfold.

The village did not announce itself in any particular order. Streets ran at angles I had not expected from the previous evening, cutting through one another without logic, as if each path had been laid to serve a single errand and had never been asked to cooperate with the rest. I wrote this in the book of readings: spreads unevenly. Paths serve themselves.

The Lamplighter met us near the second crossing, a short figure still extinguishing the overnight wicks, moving in a practiced loop that cut diagonally across what I had assumed was a main road. Lano noticed her first, nose lifting, ears perked, tail beginning its slow wag. The Lamplighter paused to look at the dog and then at us.

"Road party," she said. Not a question.

"Readers," I said.

She accepted this and went back to her wick. The Builder watched the lamp housings with professional attention. "Iron brackets," she said quietly to me. "Older than the posts. Salvaged from somewhere with a different plan."

We found the Brook-warden at the channel running beneath the mill lane. She was checking the water level with a marked rod, her records kept in a notebook tied to her belt. The Weather Reader stepped to the bank and asked after the spring readings. The Brook-warden tilted her head and gave a figure without looking up. The Weather Reader checked her barometric log and nodded, satisfied, something confirmed between them without ceremony.

Rurik marked the bridge threshold, walking across and back once, tail high. He did not explain. He never did.

The Schoolkeeper we found last, at the building with chalk-dusted steps. She had propped the door open despite the fog and was writing on an exterior board that faced the lane. She glanced at Lano and said, "She can come in, if she likes."

Lano did not go in. She sat on the lowest step and watched the chalk move. Quieta, content.

The Schoolkeeper offered us a look at her attendance records: the ebb and flow of who showed up to learn in Umberfold, which weeks saw the room full, which months saw it hollow. A reading in numbers. I copied the shape of it into the book without the numbers themselves.

Walking back, the Builder said, "The brackets are from the eastern quarter. Older than the mill lane."

"That's where we walk tomorrow," I said.

She gave a small nod. The fog thinned at the edges of the village but held at the center, and the lamps burned on into morning without anyone asking them to stop.
