Dream d1822-s: The Loaded Wheel
2026-06-20 00:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the drizzle had settled into something patient and fine, not enough to drive us inside but enough to darken every beam in Umberfold and make the cobbles slick underfoot. The lamps had been lit since dawn. By mid-morning we were already at work.
The Builder had found her place in the building frame at the north end of the main street. She was up on scaffold alongside two of the settlement's carpenters, calling down load-paths and joint angles with the confidence of someone reading a familiar language. I stood below, making notes as she spoke. The new frame rode on posts that had been sunk too shallow on the east side, she said - the ground too soft from recent rain. She said it flatly, no alarm in it, just the way a fact sits. The carpenters nodded and one went for longer posts.
Rurik had stationed himself at the scaffold's base, tail tucked around his feet, watching the street. He does this: marks the place where something is being built, as if the threshold matters even mid-construction. His amber eyes tracked every passerby.
Lano picked her way along a line of boot-prints in the mud at the street's edge - weeks old but still impressed in the packed earth, leading toward the testing ground at the settlement's margin. She followed the line with her nose down, then looked back at me, ears up. I murmured vamos, which she took as confirmation, and trotted ahead.
The testing ground was simple: wooden targets set at measured intervals, the distances chalked onto flat stones. Someone had been ranging here over many days, walking the same paces until the ground was scored into furrows. I wrote the distances in my book.
The Weather Reader was at the waterwheel. The mill sat at the creek's bend and the wheel turned without anyone minding it, which was the point - a counterweighted arm checked each sack that came down the chute before passing it through. She had her instruments out, watching the arm's motion, comparing its rhythm to the pressure-fall she'd recorded that morning.
"It compensates," she said when I came to stand beside her. "When the creek runs fast it slows the intake. Someone here solved the problem before they built the solution."
Lano sat by the wheel's base and watched the water turn.
The hammers started again in the early afternoon and ran past dark, voices carrying in the drizzle. We ate with the carpenters. I wrote it all down.
