Dream d1796-s: Hammers Past Midnight

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the mist off the river had thickened by the time we reached Brackensquare's south wall, and the town behind it was louder than any settlement I'd known at that hour. Lanterns in every upper window. The sound of hammers, and then voices cutting over the hammers, and then hammers again.

Rurik sat on the lip of the trough near the main gate and watched the road behind us - the cart-tracks pressed deep into the mud, recent enough that the edges hadn't crumbled. He said nothing. He didn't need to.

"Three roads in," the Builder said, crouching at the nearest track and running a thumb along the rut's inner wall. "All loaded coming in, not going out." She stood and wiped her hand on her coat. "Whatever they're building, the materials are still here."

The Weather Reader had her instruments out before we'd cleared the gate arch. She walked with the barometer tilted slightly, reading it the way you'd read a letter you'd already read twice. "The pressure's steady but the air's been disturbed," she said. "Heat sources working late. Forges, maybe. Or kilns."

Inside, the long tables at the guild hall were full. I counted twenty people at the nearest table alone, each with their own set of tools laid out in the particular order that people use when the tools are theirs and the work is known. No one looked up. Lano moved between the table legs, nose working along the floor, ears tracking the room's sounds without judgment.

I opened the book of readings and began to write: Cart roads pressed deep on all approaches. Work past midnight. Many hands at long tables, each working separately on the same task - a distributed effort, not a directed one. Testing grounds at the eastern edge: targets, measured distances, a cleared field with posts at intervals.

We had walked out to that field in the late afternoon. The posts were spaced with the careful irregularity of real testing rather than demonstration. Someone had been here with a measuring tape and a specific problem in mind.

"It's not celebration work," the Weather Reader said, beside me now, reading over my shoulder without apology. "The pressure in a place doing celebration work runs different. This is problem-solving. They've found something they need to get right."

The Builder came in from the yard, hands in her pockets. "The east hall has been extended inside the last ten days. Green timber at the joins - they didn't wait to season it."

Lano settled against my boot. I wrote that down too. The picture forming in the book was incomplete but it was no longer empty. That was the work of the third day: not conclusions, but an honest shape of what was actually here.
