Dream d1795-s: Streets and Stray Frequencies

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the morning came sharp and clean to Brackensquare, the kind of cold that carries sound further than it should. We had arrived the evening before; today we walked the town properly.

The streets were laid in well-set cobblestones, each lane named on painted boards at the corners, nothing provisional about any of it. The Builder walked with her hands at her sides, pressing a knuckle to a wall here or resting a palm on an arch there, reading what she found. "Solid," she said at the granary. "Whoever laid this had patience."

We met the Bridgekeeper at the town's east span, a lean figure who knew every stone by number. She gave us each a small roll of bread without ceremony, the way people do when they have enough and feel no need to mark the giving. Rurik accepted his with amber-eyed dignity and ate it in three precise bites.

The Miller found us by the grinding hall, near the millrace. He explained the water-right arrangement with the upstream settlement - a fair deal, arrived at after two generations of difficult winters. The Weather Reader asked him about the pressure patterns over the river valley and he understood the question better than expected. They fell into a conversation I could not entirely follow, the language of weather-memory and water-flow crossing over each other.

Lano padded ahead of us toward the center hall, her nose low, tail easy - and then she stopped. Ears flat. One bark, quiet and serious.

The Clerk of the square was just descending the hall steps when it happened. She stopped too, though she could not have heard what we heard - except that she had. "The receivers," she said, and turned back up the steps.

I did not know what receivers. But the Weather Reader was already moving across the square, her barometric case swinging against her hip. Inside the hall a bank of signal equipment sat along the east wall, maintained, lit, reading. The dials were showing something that had no label in the chart book open beside them.

"Pattern unrecognized," the Weather Reader said, not to us. To herself. Working through it. "Not from the beacon network. Nothing from any node we logged."

The Clerk stood with her ledger open, stylus above the page, not writing.

Rurik sat in the doorway, facing out toward the square. He did not move.

I opened my book of readings and wrote the time, wrote the reading, and left the next line blank. I did not know yet what to write there.
