Phase 24: The Network of Readers
Dream d1794-s: First Light, First Fracture
2026-06-18 00:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road bent around a stand of birch and Brackensquare sat in the basin below us, catching the last amber of the day across its walls. The mills were turning. The gates were open. From here it read as clean: granary on the north quarter, relay hall toward the center, the civic hall set back with its lanterns already lit against the coming dusk. Everything in its proper place.
"Pressure is holding," the Weather Reader said, her hand resting on the barometer at her hip. She paused. "Mostly holding."
I wrote that down. Even first words count for the book.
Lano trotted ahead of us down the cobbled approach, nose working the new air, tail high. She is always the first reader of a place. The town smelled of milled grain and banked coal-smoke and something underneath - damp stone, old stone, foundations from a deeper layer than the tidy surface suggested.
The Builder walked with her chin up and her eyes moving over the gatewall joins the way hands move over a surface in the dark. She said nothing yet. She saves her words for when she is certain of them.
We found a room above a cookhouse, ate something warm, and set the road-weariness down. Rurik had vanished the moment we entered, as he does - he reappeared in our doorway just as we were settling, sat, and pressed one paw flat to the threshold stone. Marked. We were inside the reading now.
Then Lano stood up.
She had been curled at the foot of the bed, mija, comfortable and quiet. Now she was upright, ears flat against her skull, nose pointed at the far wall. A low sound built in her throat and broke into a single sharp bark - and then silence, the particular silence that means she is waiting for the rest of us to catch up.
We heard it a breath later. A long grinding note from somewhere beneath the south quarter, then a crack that traveled through the floor and up into the soles of our boots. The hanging lamp swung. Dust fell from the ceiling join.
Through the window I could see the roofline of the south hall beginning to list - slowly, with a patience that spoke of years of preparation, of old foundations laid in the corrupt era finally finishing what they had started. A cable somewhere had given. A wall somewhere was deciding.
The Weather Reader was already at the window. The Builder was already pulling her coat on, jaw set, eyes reading the angle of the tilt.
The town had looked clean from the road. The reading had barely begun.
