Dream d1797-s: Frost and Long Tables
2026-06-18 08:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where Brackensquare woke before we did.
By the time I pulled on my coat and stepped into the yard, the cart-tracks in the frost were already deep - three wagons had come and gone since the dark hours, their wheel-ruts cut clean into the white-rimed mud. Somewhere across the square a hammer was going, steady and unhurried, the kind of rhythm a person finds when they have been at a thing long enough that the motion belongs to them.
The Builder was already at the long tables under the open-sided shed, her pack open, her leveling iron out. I found her running a hand along a joint where two beams met - not looking at it, just feeling. She turned her head when she heard my boots.
"They mortised this yesterday," she said. "Green wood. They knew it was green. They cut for the shrink."
I wrote that in the book: mortised for the shrink. A place that plans past the moment of building.
The Weather Reader came up from the south end with condensation on her instruments and a smudge of oil on her sleeve that had not been there at supper. She had found the testing grounds at Brackensquare's edge before I had - measured paces marked in chalk on flat stone, targets at graduated distances, the grass worn to nothing in the lanes. She had been up there watching in the grey pre-dawn, taking readings of air pressure and the particular stillness that collects in a place where people concentrate.
"It is a working stillness," she told me. "Not absence. Held breath."
We were given work. Not assigned - offered, which is different. The Bridgekeeper brought us to a long table already crowded with hands, each with their own set of tools laid out, and we took our places in the row. Lano settled herself between my boots and the next person's stool, nose going at everything within range: sawdust, linseed oil, cold air coming through the gaps in the shed wall. Her ears tracked each new sound from across the square - the hammering, a loaded barrow on cobbles, someone calling a number to someone else at the far end.
Rurik had positioned himself on a crossbeam overhead. He watched the room the way he watches all rooms: systematically, amber eyes moving from face to face. When the Bridgekeeper passed underneath him, Rurik dropped one paw briefly over the beam's edge, then pulled it back. I have learned to notice what he marks.
We worked through the frost burning off. My hands learned the table's grain. The book stayed in my pocket.
Some readings are made with tools. Some are made with the hands, staying at the work until a place trusts you with its weight.
