Dream d1328-s: Fire at the Triangle Center

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the three paths converged again at dusk, though dusk here meant something different - the sky did not darken so much as shift register, the blues cycling through frequencies that had no names in any atlas the Philosopher had packed.

We had agreed on the triangle center as the meeting point. A fire already burned there when the east group arrived - the Wireman had lit it before any of us spoke a word. He does that. He finds the structural logic of a situation and acts from it, and the rest of us arrange ourselves around the result.

The Listener sat close to the flames and held her instruments in her lap like someone resting after long work. The Dreamer was already sketching - not the fire, not us, but something behind us, the standing circles we had walked out of. I turned to look. The stone rings had caught the firelight and were reflecting it wrong, at angles that suggested interior surfaces nobody had reached.

"Eleven rings," the Dreamer said, without looking up. "Spaced at intervals that are not arbitrary."

"Nothing here is arbitrary," the Philosopher said. He had arrived from the southeast with dust on his coat and a new proposition forming behind his eyes - I could see the shape of it gathering. "The integration node answered questions I hadn't finished asking. The architecture anticipated us."

The Builder dropped her pack and unrolled her field map beside the fire. "The northeast conduits terminate at a depth of roughly forty meters. I measured the spacing. It matches the ring intervals." She tapped the map. "Same blueprint. Different material. Different era."

"How different an era?" the Weather Reader asked. He had come in behind her, and he was already checking readings, comparing the atmospheric data from his pipeline against whatever the signal had been doing while we were separated.

The Wireman looked at the fire. Then he looked at the rings. He stood and walked to the nearest standing stone and pressed his palm flat against it, the way he checks resonance in relay hardware at the settlement.

He came back and said: "Warm."

Lano lifted his nose from the ground and looked toward the circles. His ears went forward. He had been following something by scent since before we separated - the same track, I think, regardless of which direction we walked.

"Significa," Lano said, once, quietly, to no one in particular.

The Philosopher started writing. The Dreamer kept sketching. The Builder's pencil moved across the field map. The signal was still there in the atmosphere, the three frequencies now braided into something that none of our instruments had a category for.

We sat at the triangle center while the fire told us we were in the right place.
