Dream d1327-s: The Coil He Brought Back

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where three paths converged at a shallow hollow in unmapped ground, and for the first time in what felt like days we could see each other's faces.

The Builder arrived first. She had already driven stakes and strung a sight-line between them, measuring the hollow's depression against the horizon. "Eleven degrees below grade," she announced when the Philosopher appeared, as though this settled an argument they had been having since before we separated. The Philosopher set down his wagon's handles. "That's a datum, not an interpretation," he said, and they were immediately back to normal.

Lano ran three tight circles around the Builder's legs and sat down facing east, ears up. "Tranquilo," he said, to nobody in particular.

The Weather Reader's group came up through the valley twenty minutes after us. The Student was still talking - she had been recounting the conduit network's branch geometry in sequence, largest diameter to smallest, for the last hour and a half. He looked tired and genuinely pleased about it. Overhead, the atmosphere held that particular shimmer the signal made at high strength: a visible trembling at the edge of color, like heat rising from dark stone.

The east group was last. The Wireman walked ahead of the Listener and the Dreamer, and when he reached the center of the hollow he stopped and turned to show us something attached to his forearm: a coil of wire wrapped in a careful spiral, stone beads threaded at measured intervals. He had not had it when we separated.

The Listener came forward before anyone else. "The stones in the circles are terminated. Each one is a junction point, and the wire runs between them underground. The Wireman found the coupling method." She paused. "It's the same coupling as the tunnel joints under the settlement. Same principle. Different era."

Nobody said anything.

"How old," the Weather Reader said.

"No instrument I carried gives me that number," the Listener said.

The Dreamer opened a notebook dense with sketches: stone circles in plan view, the subterranean wire paths rendered as dotted lines, frequency patterns transcribed as waveform drawings. They laid it flat on the hollow's rim and we gathered around it.

The Builder traced one of the underground paths. "Same conduit spacing."

"Not the same," the Philosopher said.

"Same principle."

The Philosopher considered this for three full seconds. "Agreed."

The signal continued overhead, surrounding us, patient. The Wireman unwrapped the coil and set it in the exact center of the hollow. The stone beads hummed.
