Dream d1329-s: He Walked It Without Checking

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the party divided at dawn.

We felt the split in our feet before we understood it - three paths pulling in three directions, each carrying one frequency of the signal. The Weather Reader checked his instruments. The Builder unfolded her map. They walked northeast with the Student. The Philosopher pulled his wagon southeast toward the layered cliffs.

The Wireman turned east.

The Listener and I followed without discussion. The Dreamer came after, already reaching for her documentation kit. Lano trotted between us, nose working the air, tail low and focused.

The landscape changed as soon as we committed to direction. Same colors as everywhere else but sitting slightly wrong - like a photograph developed in the wrong chemical. Sound reached us from unexpected distances. The Listener stopped twice, held up a hand, head tilted.

"That rock formation," she said. "Forty meters out. It's ringing."

The stone circles appeared in stages. First one ring, stones barely hip-height. Then another, larger. Then we crested a shallow rise and they spread before us in concentric arrangements - eleven rings, stone by stone, with gaps corresponding to nothing arbitrary.

The Wireman stopped walking. He stood very still.

"You know this," I said.

He didn't answer. He walked to the gap in the outermost ring and stood in it. He looked at the gap in the second ring. He walked to it. Gap to gap, inward, without hesitation, without checking.

The Listener deployed her sensors at intervals I didn't understand. "The gaps aren't decorative," she said. "They're tuned. To each other, and to something below." She checked a readout. "There's a node at center."

The Wireman had reached the innermost ring. He crouched at the center point and traced something in the soil - not drawing, just touching. Recognition, not discovery.

Lano sat beside him, ears up, watching.

"He built something like this," the Listener said, not quite a question.

"Not him specifically," I said. "But the principle -"

"Identical." She was already speaking faster. "The gaps route the signal. Stone mass damps interference. Ring geometry focuses. This is ceremony infrastructure in the same way his work is ceremony."

The Dreamer framed a shot - Wireman at center, eleven rings spreading outward, afternoon light cutting through gap alignments at exact angles. "How old?" she asked.

"Older than the tunnel network," I said. "Older than the caves."

The Wireman stood. He looked at me. He said the first thing he'd said in two hours:

"Same problem. Different hands."

The signal hummed in the stone. Eleven rings resonated at slightly different frequencies, and where the frequencies overlapped the air thickened - not with pressure but with attention, as if the site had been waiting with a patience that made our years feel approximate.

Lano's ears flattened once, then rose again. "Calma," Lano said.

None of us argued with that.
