Dream d1012-s: The Hum They Followed

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I heard them before I saw them. Not their footsteps - those were soft on the cracked asphalt - but the equipment they carried: a low rattle of coiled cable against aluminum casing, the faint knock of something magnetic shifting inside a padded compartment. Lano heard it first. Her ears lifted well before I turned. She did not bark. She sat at the edge of the road and waited.

The figure came around the far bend with two cases in each hand and something long strapped across their back - a mast section, collapsed and lashed with cord. They walked with the gait of someone accustomed to weight and distance. At the settlement's edge they stopped. Set down the cases. Looked up - not at the beacon light but somewhere in the air between the beacon and themselves, the way a person listens when they are orienting by sound.

I recognized them then. The one who had spoken in waveforms, who had shown me that a signal's shape carries meaning beyond its content. Phase 16, or what I remembered of it - frequencies mapped on paper, the difference between a healthy channel and a degraded one. They had not called it teaching. They had called it tuning.

Lano trotted forward. She circled the cases once, nose low, taking inventory of where this equipment had been. The Listener watched her without speaking.

"You heard it," I said. Not a question.

They nodded once. "The pulse has a harmonic. Specific one. I've been logging signal sources for months - most of them are noise or echo. This one was intentional." They looked at the beacon. "Someone who understood frequencies chose that carrier wave."

The Builder appeared at the edge of the work area - not approaching, just present. The Listener glanced over, acknowledged with a small movement of the head. Old respect, the kind that does not require ceremony.

"Bien," Lano said, settling against one of the equipment cases.

We carried the cases in through the settlement's open approach. The Philosopher was visible near the long structure, watching. The Wire Man sat atop the transmission array with a cable in each hand, not pretending not to look. The Dreamer stood at the beacon base and said nothing, only observed with that particular stillness they had always carried.

The Listener walked slowly through the settlement, listening. Genuinely listening - pausing near the generator hum, near the junction box where two cable runs crossed, near the beacon's mounting where the pulse converted from signal to light. Taking the measure of the place by its sound before they said anything about what they had brought.

I watched them listen and remembered that this was always how they started.
