Dream d1013-s: Amplitude of Return

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the beacon was speaking in two registers at once - the light anyone could see from the ridgeline, and the frequency underneath, the one only some people knew how to listen for.

I was at the edge of the hilltop when Lano went still. Not alert-still, not threat-still - the kind of still that happens when something familiar enters range. Her ears tilted forward, catching something before my eyes could. I followed her gaze down the slope.

The figure came up from the ravine side, not the road. Moving slowly, deliberate with weight - both cases in hand, a shoulder rig across the back, something long and canvas-wrapped strapped across that. They moved the way someone moves when they have walked a long distance and are nearly done with it.

I recognized the way they stopped to listen before every clearing.

The Builder had come up beside me without my hearing it. That was the Builder's way - arriving at the moment a second presence was needed. We watched together.

The Listener set down one case at the edge of the flat ground, turned slowly, and looked not at the beacon but toward the beacon's sound - the low electrical hum the tower put out, the pulse that rode the air as much as the light did. They stood there for a long moment with their head at a slight angle, the posture of someone confirming a signal.

Lano trotted out ahead of me. No bark. Just the trot, the nose working.

"Bien," Lano said, and sat down three meters from the Listener's feet.

The Listener looked down at her, then at me. Something in their face resolved - not surprise, more like calibration completing.

They did not speak. They reached into the open case and lifted out a small receiver, the kind with a dial and a needle gauge, and held it toward the beacon. The needle swung and settled. They watched it. Then they looked at the Builder - a look that passed something between them without words, one infrastructure person recognizing another.

We helped carry the cases the rest of the way up. The canvas-wrapped thing was an antenna, long and segmented, fitted together in sections. The cases held transmitters, modulators, a coil of specialized cable in a color I did not have a name for.

The Philosopher was at the fire. The Wire Man was on the north wall. They watched the arrival without moving.

The Listener set the receiver down on the workbench the Builder had built in the first week, plugged it in, and listened to the settlement's hum for a long time before saying anything at all.

The beacon pulsed. The needle held steady. Outside, through the stripped towers, the light was going amber, and the settlement was one frequency richer than it had been that morning.
