Dream d1011-s: Frequency Before Footfall

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I heard something different in the air before I saw the figure at the settlement edge. Not the beacon's pulse - that had become part of my breathing by now, a rhythm I stopped noticing the way you stop noticing your own heartbeat. This was something else. A response. A frequency answering the frequency.

Lano heard it first. Her ears went upright and she turned to face the ridge road before I saw anything there. Her nose worked the air in small quick movements, and she took two steps forward and stopped, waiting.

The figure came over the crest carrying two large cases and a coil of cable over one shoulder. They moved carefully, the way people move when they are listening while walking - head slightly tilted, attention somewhere between the ears and the horizon. They were not looking at the beacon. They were aimed at it, the way a compass needle points, but their eyes were closed for a long moment as they crested the ridge.

I walked out to meet them. Lano trotted ahead of me, tail moving, and went straight to the cases before going to the person - sniffing the corners of each case in sequence, reading something in the smell of the equipment. Then she sat back and looked up at the figure.

"Bien," she said.

The figure opened their eyes and looked at her, then at me. They did not speak. They set down the cases slowly, deliberately, and stood still for a moment with their eyes half-closed again. Listening. I understood, remembering - this was how they worked. The listening came before everything.

The Builder came from the direction of the main fire, wiping hands on a piece of cloth. They looked at the cases, at the coil of cable, at the figure. A small nod. The cases would tell them what they needed to know.

I shook the Listener's hand. They gripped it firmly and held it for a moment, still not speaking, and I had the feeling they were listening to the settlement itself - the hum of cables under tension, the beacon's rhythmic pulse, the sound of tools and footsteps and fire. Taking a reading.

When they finally spoke it was one word, quiet: "There."

They pointed at the open ground between the beacon tower and the eastern berm. Not a question. A placement. They had already heard where the transmitter should go.

I picked up one of the cases. It was heavier than expected - full of modulators, I guessed, and receivers, and the dense coiled weight of salvaged audio components. The Listener took the other. The Builder picked up the cable.

We walked toward the spot they had pointed to. The beacon pulsed overhead, steady, unchanged, already talking to something none of us had built yet.
