Dream d926-s: Frequency Before the Load

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the generator shed smelled like diesel and oxidized terminals, and the Builder was already inside when I arrived, one hand on the panel, one ear listening.

Lano came through the gap in the corrugated wall ahead of me, nose working the corners. The shed held four racks bolted to raw timber frames - not elegant, functional. The kind of thing you build when you are not performing building, when you are actually building. Half the terminals were dark. The other half threw light that pulsed, not steadily, but in the way of something almost found.

The Builder said: frequency first. The generator was running but it was not running clean. He had a meter clamped to the bus bar. We watched the number together. It should have been steady. It walked back and forth across the display like it was thinking about something else.

Beneath the floorboards - I could feel it more than hear it - the old conduit ran. Those same tunnels from the earliest surveys, the ones that predated everything we were building now. The Builder had mapped them three days before. They were intact. They were waiting. Nothing would move through them until the power above was honest.

He handed me the other meter lead. I clipped it to ground. We stood in the flicker and watched the numbers argue with each other.

Lano sat near the door, ears forward. A heron had landed on the stripped mast outside - I could see its silhouette through the gap, patient, reading whatever it reads.

Slowly the numbers stopped walking. The generator had found its rhythm. Not because we pushed it. Because we waited with it, watching, not routing anything through it until the frequency held. That is the thing the Student never understood: patience here is not passive. It is the act of refusing to trust signal that has not proven itself.

The panel lights stopped pulsing. They held.

We ran the first cable then - one, down through the conduit access panel, into the old network beneath. Not a system. One cable. One path. We watched a single node come online somewhere below us in the dark. Its status light, visible through a small floor grate, blinked twice and held green.

Lano padded over to the grate and looked down into it.

"Bien," he said, quietly, and lay down beside it.

The heron lifted off the mast. The generator ran without drama. We had power now, and it was honest, and that was enough to begin.
