Dream d925-s: Buried Pair Still Live

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I was standing in a trench that cut between two collapsed structures, the walls on either side jagged with old conduit ends poking through, plastic sleeves sun-cracked and brittle. The trench was chest-deep in places. The Builder was already down in it when I arrived, crouched over a junction box with a headlamp, reading conductors with a tone generator.

Lano stood at the trench edge, looking down, ears perked. He watched the Builder's movements the way he watches something that requires patience.

"Come in," the Builder said. Not an invitation. A direction.

I dropped into the trench. The walls were compacted dust and old cable beds, layer on layer of infrastructure that had gone in over decades and had never come out. Pulling the old fiber revealed more fiber beneath it. Pulling that revealed something older - a thick bundle of twisted pair still in its conduit, still sealed. The Builder pressed a hand against it.

"Test it," he said.

I ran the toner. The signal came back clean. Somewhere a hundred meters south, in what had been a relay station and was now three walls and a generator shed, something answered.

The Builder pulled his notebook from his chest pocket and made a mark. Not a celebration. A datum.

We worked the trench for most of the morning. Where the conduit had split, we cut and spliced. Where it had corroded at a coupling, we replaced the coupling and retested before moving on. The Builder did not move to the next section until the previous section held. I learned this by watching - he would put the toner down, look at the reading, wait a moment, then nod. Then we moved.

Lano padded along the trench edge above us, nose working the air. At one point he stopped and looked down at a section of wall we had not reached yet. He said, "Aqui."

The Builder glanced up. We went to that section. Beneath a crumble of old conduit housing, a clean sleeve, intact, no fracture. Thirty meters of buried pair we had not expected to find.

By afternoon, the relay station answered on two channels instead of one. Not a network yet. A start.

At the end of the trench, where it opened into a larger channel that disappeared underground toward the old cave systems, the Builder sat at the edge with his notebook and sketched the topology - not what it had been, what it was now. Two nodes. One tested link between them. Honest ground.

A heron landed on a stripped antenna mast above us and was still.

I thought: this is what it looks like. The first thing before the first thing. A buried pair, still live, waiting for someone to test it.
