Dream d3731-s: The Account Before Supper

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I arrived at the edge of Ospreyfield as the last daylight was flattening against the stones.

The road had been long enough that my bag had shifted to one shoulder without my noticing, and the strap had left a groove in my coat. At the first building inside the perimeter - a low structure with a split-plank door standing wide to the evening - a worker looked up from a bench and did not speak. She watched my hands.

I told her I had come from the place to the east. I told her what I had seen there. Not the count, not the reckoning, but the texture of it: the way the light sat in the late afternoon on the far side of the ridge, the particular sound of work that was careful rather than urgent, the presence of people who had not yet decided what the place was for.

She set down what she was holding - a length of cord, wound into a figure-eight between two pegs - and listened the way you listen when you are deciding how much weight to give something. Not hostile. Not welcoming, either. Present the way a wall is present: solid, registering.

Lano had fallen behind me on the path and arrived just then, shaking dust from her ears. She pressed against the doorframe and went still, nose working the interior air.

A second worker, farther back, did not look up at all. He went on with his task - something at a low table that involved folding and pressing, something with cloth or paper - but his hands had slowed.

When I finished, the woman at the bench picked up the cord again. She rewound the figure-eight with the same unhurried movement, the loop catching on the first peg with a soft click. Then she said: "We did not know the ridge passage was open."

That was all. Not an invitation and not a dismissal. It was what she had received from what I had brought.

I set the bag against the near wall. It made the sound a bag makes when it has been carried far enough - a soft, full thud. Lano circled once and curled beside it, her chin on her forepaws.

The room went on being what it was: the cord being wound, the distant hands pressing something flat, the last light going grey at the threshold.
