Dream d3730-s: The Gap They Did Not Close

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the response came late in the day, when the light through the workroom window had turned from white to pale yellow and the shadow of the sill lay across the table at a long angle.

Three workers were already seated when the fourth came back. He set his travelling bag against the door frame before he crossed the threshold - the same bag he always carried, worn at the lower corner where he rested it against his hip on long walks. He did not sit. He stood at the edge of the table and spoke, and the three already there stopped their work and listened without turning their heads.

The other place had found a different figure in the same column. Not wrong - just different. They had begun their count at an earlier date; we had started two weeks later. Both were defensible. Both reflected a real choice about where the boundary of the period sat.

The worker nearest the window moved her pen but did not write with it. She set it down parallel to the edge of the paper. The one across from her pulled the second sheet - ours - and laid it beside theirs without overlapping. A thumb's width of bare table between the two, so both remained fully readable.

That was the decision. No one stated it. Both figures would remain. The gap between them would not be closed by an explanation or smoothed into a single number. It would sit as it was: two honest readings of the same period, each from its own starting point, the difference held where anyone who needed to trace it could.

I took the travelling bag from the door frame and hung it on the hook by the stairs. The worker who had returned nodded once, then drew out a stool and sat.

The lamp was already lit against the fading window. When the light shifted further and one column dropped into shadow, the worker nearest the glass reached up without glancing away from the page and adjusted the shade so both sheets stayed equally bright.

Outside, a cart moved on the cobbles. A door closed somewhere further down the street. None of it entered the room. The two sheets lay side by side in the lamplight, the small space between them kept open, the differences legible to anyone who looked.
