Dream d3721-s: What the Closed Face Holds

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood on the last stretch of road before Quillgreen, with the bag pulling at my shoulder the way it always does after the third day - not heavy exactly, but present, reminding me of every object inside it and the decisions each one required.

The settlement showed itself gradually. A roofline first, then the edge of a wall in ochre-painted stone, then the gate that I had been told was always passable before the evening shift change. I arrived at that gate to find it shut.

Not locked. I could see the iron keeper was unset. But shut. I laid my hand flat against the wood and felt nothing move beneath it - no vibration of work on the other side, no footstep or cart on the interior path.

I set the bag down at the wall's base and stood back. The gate faced me the way a closed account faces an auditor: complete in itself, presenting nothing until asked by the right person in the right way.

Two workers came up the road behind me. They slowed when they saw the bag and the closed gate, assessed the situation in the way experienced people assess what they arrive to find, and chose positions to wait. One sat on the low wall opposite; the other crouched and retied a boot lace that needed no retying. Neither said anything. The gate gave back nothing.

I had sent word ahead. Three days prior, from the stone wayhouse where I had slept on the bench rather than the floor. The message had gone with a reliable carrier - reliable meaning she had been taking this route for eleven years and had never once lost a packet. Whether the message had arrived, whether the arrival had prompted any preparation, whether anyone on the other side of that gate was at this moment aware that I was standing on this side of it - none of these were things I could know by looking at the wood.

The road was quiet. Slate-colored clouds moved south, catching the late afternoon and pressing it flat. A few dry leaves crossed from one side of the road to the other without urgency.

The gate did not open.

I picked the bag back up, moved it from the right shoulder to the left, and settled my weight into the new arrangement. One of the workers behind me shifted on the wall. The other finished tying the boot and stayed crouched, elbow on knee, watching the same gate I was watching.

We waited.
