Dream d3720-s: Bag Down at the Threshold

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road into Quillgreen narrowed at the last bend and the buildings pressed in from both sides. Slate-colored stone, ochre trim at the eaves, the kind of construction that has settled into itself across many seasons until the materials and the mortar have become one continuous thing. I had come a long way. My bag was heavier than it had been at the start, which made no sense, since I had used everything I brought and replaced nothing. I set it down at the step and rolled my shoulder and looked at the door.

The door was shut. Not locked - or not that I could tell. The latch was an old iron piece, curved in a way that would accept a thumb, worn to a dull shine where hands had worked it many times. I did not reach for it. From inside the building came the sounds of continuous work: something crossing a floor, something stacked or sorted with care, the particular rhythm of an occupation that had found its pace. Nobody spoke.

Lano sat by the bag. Her nose went up once toward the gap at the door's edge, tracking whatever it tracked, then she settled. She put her chin on her forepaws and watched the middle distance without particular urgency.

I had called out. Once, with the kind of voice that asks for a specific thing - the current state of things, what word had come from inside. The question reached the door and went no further. The work continued without pause. The gap between the door and its frame gave back no answer.

I stood to one side of the worn hollow in the center of the step, the hollow made by years of feet approaching and departing, the same shallow concavity that appears on every step where a decision has been made often enough to mark the stone. The step here was a warm pale ochre in the soft daylight. I had noticed that the paint on the left side of the frame was thicker in the lower corner, built up from many applications over many years until the grain beneath had been absorbed entirely.

These were not things I had planned to notice. The bag leaned against my leg. Lano's ear tilted once and held.

Whatever the work inside required, it did not require me yet. The door remained as I had found it. The request I had made sat unanswered in the space between us, not refused, not acknowledged - simply held by the closed wood and the sounds of continuing occupation. The ochre was warm. The daylight was soft. I waited with the patience of someone who has traveled a long distance to stand at a step and has not yet been told whether the distance was the right one to travel.
