Dream d3692-s: Mostly Accurate

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the doorway of the answer-house faced west, and the morning light came in flat, laying long pale rectangles across the stone floor. A worker - older, thick-wristed - crouched beside a travelling bag and sorted through its contents with the patient efficiency of someone who had done this many times before.

I watched from near the window. The stone was cool under my feet. The bag was worn brown leather, oiled so many times the surface no longer absorbed light but deflected it in small smeared patches.

The worker drew out a folded paper, unfolded it, read it without expression, folded it again and set it aside. Drew out a second. Read it. Set it with the first. The two made a small stack beside the bag.

I had been meaning to record something here - a clarification, or simply a confirmation that nothing had moved since the last visit. The place had not changed in the ways I'd half-expected. The rafters showed the same dark stain from an old leak. The row of clay hooks along the east wall still held the same number of empty coils of rope.

The worker looked up once, not at me but at the window, as if checking the light. Then back to the bag. A pair of worn gloves went in, rolled together. A short candle stub wrapped in cloth.

I took the papers from my own pocket - two small folded sheets, the answers I'd been turning over since the previous night. The first said nothing had changed in the way of urgency. The second said the counting was still short by a number I couldn't verify without the unwitnessed places. I folded them together and put them at the top of my bag where I'd find them on the road back.

The light shifted slightly. The worker stood, tested the bag's weight by lifting it once and setting it down, adjusted a buckle.

Two workers in a quiet room, preparing to leave with answers that were mostly accurate and partially uncertain. The clay hooks held their empty coils. The stain on the rafters did not explain itself. Outside, the day waited with no particular urgency.
