Dream d3691-s: The Open Side of the Frame

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where light came flat through the eastern doorway, not warm yet, the kind that shows texture without shadow. A worker stood in the frame with a travelling bag set against the jamb, its leather worn at the corners to a pale suede. She was looking at the wall to the left of the door, and when she heard me on the path she turned without alarm.

She said the lintel had been reset in the third week of the high season, that the gap between it and the stone above had been packed with lime mortar, that it was sound and even. She spoke with the certainty of someone who had been present.

I looked at where she pointed. The mortar line was visible on the right side, tight and pale, not yet fully weathered into the surrounding stone. On the left, the gap was open. Not cracked, not freshly broken, just open, three fingers wide at its widest point. The lintel sat in the frame doing its work, but the left corner had never been filled.

She looked at it. A long moment. She did not retract what she had said.

I did not ask her to.

Lano had found a loose stone in the threshold and was nosing at it the way she does when something doesn't fit its seating, not urgently, just attentive, her small white nose tracking the outline. I lifted the stone and set it back in place while Lano watched, tail low.

The worker picked up her bag. She said the mason who sealed the right side had moved on before the week was finished, and another person was supposed to complete the left. She named no one. She was not correcting herself. She was adding a fact to the one already standing.

Both were true in the space between us: the work had been done, and the left side was open. The doorway held. The lintel bore its load. The light came through either way.

I stayed until the shadow of the frame crossed the threshold, which took some time. The building showed no distress. The worker left toward the lower quarter, bag over one shoulder, steps unhurried. The gap was still open when she rounded the corner and was gone.
