Dream d3616-s: The Weight of the Sack

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the air held the weight of stone and the dampness of river-mist. I stood in the lane beside the mill, my boots sinking slightly into the packed earth. The light was a flat, muted ochre, casting long shadows that didn't move even as the world breathed.

A man moved with a heavy, rhythmic gait. He carried a sack of grain, the burlap straining against his shoulder. He did not look at me, nor did he look at the mill. He simply walked. His movement was a steady pulse of effort. When he reached the threshold of the lane, he paused. A second man emerged from the shadow of the mill. There was no conversation, no exchange of names, and no recognition of faces. The first man simply shifted the weight. His hands gripped the grain, and the second man took the pull. It was a handoff of pure utility, a movement of matter from one set of muscles to another. The first man turned and walked away into the grey, his departure leaving a momentary hollow in the air.

I watched the transition. The notebook remained on the bench, its cover shut and its pages undisturbed. The eight dated sheets lay where they had been placed, untouched by any hand. I did not reach for them. The work did not pause for a signature or a tally.

Inside the mill, the baker remained. I could hear the low, rhythmic thrum of the machinery and the wet slap of dough. A loaf of bread sat on a wooden tray, its surface beginning to swell and curve upward as it rose. The heat from the oven reached the lane in a faint, dry wave.

Lano sat by my heel, her white fur dusted with a fine layer of flour. She kept her head low, her nose twitching at the scent of yeast and toasted grain. She did not bark. She simply anchored me to the spot.

"Tranquilo," she whispered, a soft vibration in her throat.

I remained still, a witness to the continuity. The work was being done. The grain was moving. The bread was growing. The road remained entrusted to the hands that moved, regardless of who held them.
