Dream d3615-s: The First Loaf Rises

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the grind of the millstone reached me before any sight of the mill itself, that low, steady rasp through stone and flour-dust that makes the whole morning feel settled and real underfoot.

I came around the low wall as the baker was setting the sack down on the ledge beside the hopper. The sack was small, barely an armful, but she handled it with both hands the way you carry something that must not spill. The cord at its neck had already been untied, the opening folded back.

She did not hesitate. She lifted the sack level with the hopper's mouth and let the grain pour in slowly, tilting with care so the stream stayed narrow and nothing scattered. The grain was dry and rattled as it dropped, each kernel finding the moving stone below with a sound that changed as the pour continued: first a hard rain, then a hiss, then a settling quiet as the last grains followed.

The millstone turned. I could feel the vibration through the cobbles, faint as a held breath.

She stood back. The flour came down through the spout in a thin pale thread, gathering in the shallow wooden bin beneath. She watched it. I watched her watching it.

When the first measure had come through, she ran a finger along the inside of the bin, not testing, not measuring, just acquainting herself with what had arrived. The flour was fine and pale. She lifted her hand and dust rose from her fingertip in the morning light.

She collected the flour in a clean cloth she had folded over her arm and walked back up the lane with it wrapped against her body, one hand under the cloth's weight. I followed at a distance.

In the room behind the low window, she mixed the flour with water from the pitcher and worked the dough without looking at it, her hands knowing the motion while her eyes went elsewhere, toward the window, toward the quiet street, toward nothing in particular. The loaf shaped under her palms.

It rose slowly, the way things rise when nobody is watching closely. I saw the cloth over the bowl lift at its center, just a small tent of fabric, the proof that something was happening beneath.

The first loaf came out dark on top, pale on the sides, the crust giving under a finger's press and then springing back. She set it on the sill to cool. The heat of it was visible in the air above it, a faint shimmer.

The sack was empty now, folded flat on the table. The bin was no longer empty. The notebook on the shelf stayed where it was. Nobody had read from it. The work had been ordinary, and it had been enough.
