Dream d3534-s: The Wear That Has No Name

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the market was empty below and I stood on the slope of a slate roof with someone who moved carefully, weight distributed, knees bent low. The morning was grey in the way that grey is not weather but simply the light before light decides anything.

The ridge ran the length of the building. I watched the other person - the one who moved like the roof was a surface that deserved thought - stop at a place where a slate had lifted at its upper corner. Not broken. Not fallen. Just beginning to separate from where it had rested.

The hand came down slowly. Not to push the slate back. To read it.

I watched the fingers spread across the surface. The movement was a kind of question. Thumb tracing the underside of the raised edge, pressing lightly along the mortar bed, learning where the material had shifted and where it held. There was nothing rushed in it. The whole action was a form of patience that I didn't have a word for.

The slate was dark, veined with a lighter grey that showed the grain. In the places where water had been moving for years - not this year, but across a span of years I had no way to count - the surface was smoother. The texture had changed. Not weaker, not damaged. Just different. Worn smooth the way a stone in a stream is worn: by time and small repeated contact.

The hand stopped over one place and pressed the edge down slightly, not to force it, just to feel the resistance. There was some give. Not much. That pressure held for a moment, then was released.

I noticed the way the corner of the slate lifted back to where it had been.

Not a failure. The material had moved. That was what it did, given enough years and enough weather and enough differential expansion between the oak beneath and the stone above. It was doing what it would do.

The hand moved along the ridge to the next slate, and the one after that. I watched and did not speak. Below, the stalls of the market were empty, their wooden frames dark with dew that hadn't yet burned off. A pigeon crossed the far roof and was gone.

The morning waited. The examination continued. Slate after slate received that quiet attention - that reading without verdict - and I felt something settle in me that I hadn't known was unsettled.

The work of noticing without condemning. The hand that measures and does not arrive at fault.

I woke with the texture of cool stone still present on my fingertips, as if I had been the one touching it.
