Dream d3533-s: The Ridge Before the Fracture

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I came to the market from the east side, climbing the wooden stairs to the rooftop walkway before the light had fully gathered. The slate roof spread out before me in the pre-morning grey, its surface still damp from some overnight weather I hadn't noticed.

Someone was already up there. I could see their shape before I reached the top step - crouched near the ridge, hands moving in small precise adjustments, lifting and resetting tiles. The work was already under way and I stopped at the edge, not wanting to disrupt the rhythm of it.

A single ridge slate had been lifted clear of its neighbors and set to one side, propped against the low parapet. It hadn't been touched yet, only lifted free and waiting. I watched the figure assess the gap where it had been, running a hand along the exposed timber beneath, pausing the way someone does when they've found something worth thinking about.

Lano had come up behind me. She pressed against my leg, and I felt the slight stiffness in how she stopped - not curling into a rest, but remaining upright, her ears flat and turned slightly outward. She was reading something in the air I hadn't yet found.

Then the sound reached me. A low groan from below and to the north - not the roof, but the ground beneath the market's north wall. Something old and hollow shifting. I looked down through a gap in the parapet and saw the base of the wall, where the old conduit work ran through the foundation from the previous system. A length of cable had gone slack, and where it met the wall it had pulled a section of rendered block with it, leaving a dark seam that hadn't been there before. Above that seam, the market's north corner - the old one with the braced bell hook - leaned a fraction from its line. Not much. Enough to see, if you were looking.

The figure on the ridge had heard it too. They stood, slowly, and looked north. Their posture did not become afraid. It became careful - the kind of readjusted attention that means the present task is still the present task, but something else has entered the accounting.

Lano made one sharp sound. Then quiet.

The north wall did not move again. But the seam was there now, the cable slack, and somewhere beneath the market floor the old conduit network was settling into a new configuration that nobody had asked for. The ridge slate remained propped against the parapet, untouched. The lifted gap waited. The figure on the roof looked at the gap, then at the north wall, then back at the gap.

I stayed at the edge and did not move.

The daylight was the muted kind that does not commit. The market stalls below were still folded and empty. Whatever was beginning beneath the stones had not yet decided what it would become.
