Phase 46: The Kept Account
Dream d3401-s: Open Ground, Shut Account
2026-10-09 00:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the last mile of open ground lay flat and without feature, the grass pale from an autumn that had come early and stayed. Brackenspire stood ahead on the skyline, a single spire, no other shape beside it. I had seen it named in the record before this morning and never once in a dream. Now I was walking toward it with the notebook shut under my arm.
Lano moved ahead of me on the path, her white coat catching the low light. She stopped once and sniffed at the root of a roadside stone, then continued. She did not hurry.
The relay clerk walked beside me. There had been no words since the last village. The entry-keeper had the count sheet folded in a coat pocket, consulting nothing. We were all carrying what we carried.
The spire grew as we walked. It was dark stone, rough-cut, narrower at the top than I expected. No windows visible at this distance. No smoke. The ground around it had been cleared once, years back, and the clearing had grown back uneven.
A keeper met us at the edge of the settlement. They did not ask about the notebook. They gestured toward the spire and toward a low building beside it, the arrangement of the offer and not the offer itself. I noted what I could see.
We stood there a while, the four of us and the dog, while the place went on. A bird crossed from one end of the ruin to the other without landing. Lano sat and watched it. The entry-keeper made no mark; this was still approach, still looking.
I had been keeping the notebook shut for six days, since it became clear that no one was waiting for it. The account called this place and no one had answered. Now we were here and the place had not changed its condition in expectation of us. The dormant stayed dormant. The spire stood.
The keeper pointed at a wall where the mortar had gone dark and said something about water. I looked at the wall. The entry-keeper looked at the wall. Neither of us asked for more; the keeper did not offer.
Lano put her nose to the ground at the base of the wall and lifted her head again. The light began to lower.
I looked at the spire once more. What the notebook held about this place had been gathered without any dream arriving here. Now a dream had arrived. The place had not been waiting. The record had not made it matter less.
The grass was coming back in uneven rows across the cleared ground. I kept the notebook under my arm and looked at that.
