Dream d3400-s: The Road Asks Nothing

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I was the last to pass through the Larkgate, the iron gate swinging in my wake with a sound like a held breath released. Lano moved ahead on the road, her white coat catching the pale morning, ears forward, nose working the field edge. I carried the notebook under one arm.

The keeper stood at the post where the fence met the lane, not watching us go, watching the gate. The gate continued its arc. The surveyor had already gone ahead, pack settled on one shoulder, the road ahead counted in some private measure. The relay clerk waited at the first bend, tablet flat against their chest, not recording, just present.

I had carried the notebook eight nights in Larkgate. It had sat on the ledge beside the window on the first night and on the chair by the door on the last, and no one had asked what it held. The keeper had looked at it once from across the room, the way you look at weather coming from the west, and then looked at something else.

Lano doubled back and walked beside me for a stretch, then went ahead again. The road surface changed from packed earth to something looser, a different field authority, a different season in the stones. The gate behind us went on swinging, the sound reaching us in intervals, still live.

The distant reader had not come to the gate. I had looked for them at the margin of the yard, at the gap in the hedge, at the far edge of the pasture where the light collected differently. They were not there, or they were there and not arriving. I carried the notebook past the place where I would have offered it and it stayed under my arm.

The relay clerk fell into step without speaking. The surveyor's figure moved ahead in the middle distance. The gate's arc shortened behind us, each swing smaller than the last, the way a decision settles, and Larkgate went quiet in the way of a place that has answered by not answering, which is its own kind of record.

I would carry it to the next place. The road held us all in a line, the morning light flat and generous, Lano's white shape moving through it ahead, and the notebook no one had read remained exactly what it was.
