Dream d3391-s: The Bench Keeps the Date

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the tower at Kestrelspire was already lit when I arrived, a single lamp burning in the high window, and the bench outside cut from old slate, worn smooth at one corner where elbows had rested through more winters than I could count.

The clerk sat at that corner, a small lamp of her own propped on a stone, writing the date in a ledger that was not mine. I stood at the edge of the bench's reach, the notebook against my chest. The clerk did not look up. She wrote the date in her steady hand, then the kindling count - the bundles by the far wall, stacked in rows of six - and did not pause to explain either entry. Beside me, Lano pressed her nose briefly to the base of the bench, then sat watching the clerk's moving hand with the attention she gives to things that hold still.

The keeper came out from the tower door carrying an armful of kindling, crossing to a second stack I hadn't seen, lower and dryer. She did not look at me or at the notebook. She worked by the lamp's edge, setting each bundle carefully, and when the stack was right she went back in. The door made a soft sound, not quite a latch.

I held the notebook and felt the weight of what was not in it yet - seventy-four places that had not been entered, names I had heard only in other people's voices. The surveyor appeared along the far wall, measuring the distance between the two kindling stacks with his arm's span, counting under his breath. He wrote something in his own record. The distant reader, I knew, was somewhere I could not see, which was how I always knew they were there.

Kestrelspire did not ask about the notebook. The bench did not shift to make room for it. The lamp in the high window burned the same way it had when I arrived. What had been witnessed here before stood in the stone and in the worn corner and in the clerk's accurate date, and I was only another entry approaching - not yet written, not refused.

Lano lifted her head and looked once toward the tower door, then settled again, her weight warm against my leg.

The clerk turned the page. The kindling stood in its two stacks. I stayed until the count felt witnessed and the place had gone on long enough that my being there was part of the going on, not a question put to it.
