Dream d3390-s: Kindling from the Far Side

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the stair landing at Kestrelspire held a pool of amber from the lamp at the bottom of the flight, and I stood in it with the notebook in my hands.

Five nights in this place. The stone underfoot had learned my weight; the third step's creak had stopped surprising me. Lano sat at the edge of the light with her nose lifted toward the upper corridor, reading whatever the dark held.

The keeper came from the far end of the landing carrying an armful of kindling. She had not come from the room where the fire was low - she had gone around, past the window that showed nothing but her own reflection and the outlined spire - and she returned the same way, choosing the longer circuit. She passed within a step of where I stood. The notebook was visible in my hands, spine up, corner-worn. She did not reach for it. She looked at it the way a person looks at a stone that has always been in the wall: confirming it, not reading it.

The surveyor came up from below with the lamp they had moved to measure the second landing. The light changed as they climbed, the amber pooling and stretching, and for a moment the notebook's cover showed its grain clearly - a rough weave, the color of old river silt. Then the surveyor passed and the landing settled back.

I had carried it since the census road. Three witnessed visits, the present condition live. The sheet said 154 places; 80 in spoken accounts, 74 still unentered. Whether Kestrelspire was one of the 74 or one of the 80 I did not ask, and no one asked me. Presence is its own record.

Lano dropped her nose from the dark and looked at me. Her tail moved once. I did not open the notebook.

The clerk sat at the low table near the window, writing something in their own hand - their own margin, their own account. The distant reader was not in the room. The fire, when the keeper fed it from the new kindling, gave off a smell of green wood, and the smoke found its way up the flue in slow pulses.

I stayed on the landing longer than I needed to. The notebook did not become lighter or heavier. Kestrelspire went on around it: the draft through the upper casement, the step-sound of someone moving two floors above, Lano finally curling against the baseboard with a small sound of settling.

Night five of seven. The place was not asking the notebook's question. The place was just going on.
