Phase 45: The Unread Notebook
Dream d3365-s: Flat Stones at the Crossing
2026-10-05 20:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the path dropped toward a brook approach and the air changed - cooler, carrying wet stone and the particular silence of moving water. Garnetbrook. I had been told the name before reaching it, but the name had not prepared me for the quality of the light, amber at the waterline where the last sun touched the shallows.
The notebook was in my pack, heavy for its size. I had carried it since the previous settlement without opening it, knowing only that it was meant for someone at the water and that presence would tell me more than reading ever could.
Lano went ahead, picking her way across the flat grey stones lining the near bank. She stopped at the water's edge and stood very still, her white coat catching the amber, nose working at something in the current's cool breath. She did not cross. She turned and looked at me.
The keeper of the place was already there - standing midstream on a broad stone, watching the water pass around both boots. They did not look up when I arrived. The survey cloth was spread on the near bank, stones set along its corners to hold it flat, and the surveyor was making a slow count of something in the middle distance. The relay clerk sat against a willow root, writing into the margin of a form that had too many columns for one page. The distant reader stood on the far bank, looking not at us but upstream, head tilted as though the sound of the water held a particular phrase they were tracking.
I set the notebook on a flat grey stone near the water. Not the center of anything - just the nearest stone that was dry and level. Lano came and sat beside it, not touching it, watching the keeper the way dogs watch a thing they have decided to wait for.
The keeper stepped from stone to stone back to the bank. They passed the notebook without pausing. Not ignoring - passing. The way you pass a tree that is already doing what it is doing.
The brook went on. The surveyor's pencil moved. The clerk folded back a page. The distant reader did not turn.
I sat down beside Lano and looked at the clear water moving through the grey stones.
"Quieto," Lano said, very soft.
The keeper did not look back. Nobody did. The notebook sat where I had placed it, in the amber light, at Garnetbrook, which had been here before any of us arrived and would be here when the path moved on.
