Phase 45: The Unread Notebook
Dream d3364-s: The Pack Holds the Unanswered
2026-10-05 19:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the west road out of Fennbridge was still in shadow when we gathered at the settlement edge. The water in the stone channel ran half its usual depth, moving gray over the old cut without catching any light yet.
The keeper stood at the gate with her back to us, watching something in the east end of the village. She did not turn when the clerk lifted his pack. She did not turn when the surveyor tightened the straps on the case. The distant reader was already a few steps ahead, her coat still dark with morning damp.
I had the notebook in my pack. It had ridden there for three days without being opened. At the gate I felt its weight shift when I bent to check Lano's footing on the wet stone. She pressed her nose once to the base of the gate post, then lifted her head and looked down the road without hurry. Her ears stayed forward.
The keeper finally turned. She looked at the pack the way you look at a familiar corner of a room - not waiting for it to speak, just confirming it is still where it was. She said something to the clerk I did not catch, and he nodded once. That was all.
We moved out onto the west road. The channel ran beside us for the first quarter-mile, the water level marking stones that should have been submerged. Lano trotted ahead a little, then circled back, then ahead again. The distant reader did not slow for any of it. The surveyor paused once to look at the drainage gate where it sat open, then caught up without writing anything down.
I thought once about the notebook. Not what was in it. Just that it was there.
Fennbridge stayed visible behind us for a long time - the east roofline, then the gate post, then only the line of channel reed where it met the settlement's edge. The keeper had gone back inside before we lost sight of the gate. The place was already going on without the question of the notebook in it.
Lano stopped once at a crossroads marker, sniffed the base, and looked back at me. I kept walking. She followed.
The water stayed low all the way to the road's first bend.
