Dream d3228-s: The Entry Before Rain

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I sat beside a hedgerow at the edge of Ashholt with a small notebook open on my knee. The evening light was flat and yellowed, the kind that comes before weather, and the wrapped parcel rested on the grass to my left.

I wrote one line. Date, place, seal intact. I closed the notebook.

The relay clerk had left the parcel that morning, the two accounts folded inside it: the faithful record of unreckoned stone from the week before, and the ninety authored moments that followed, nine residencies in sequence, two dated accounts travelling in the same cloth without either erasing the other. I had not opened it. It was not mine to open. The absent witness had not yet received it.

Lano was sitting close, pressed against my ankle. Her ears went flat before I felt it: a low pressure shift, something moving in from the north. She gave one short bark, not directed at anything I could see.

Then the wind came.

It moved through the antenna masts at the edge of the settlement with a sound like a bow drawn wrong, a high scrape, and the stays began to hum. I stood and tucked the notebook into my jacket. Rurik appeared from behind the hedgerow, amber eyes wide, and sat in the gap between the parcel and my feet, staring at the masts.

The rain came next, not a drizzle but full volume, immediate and cold. I picked up the parcel and pressed it under my arm. From the generator shed at the settlement's north end, the lights over the cable trenches flickered once, twice, and held. The trenches ran alongside the main path and I could already see the water pooling at the low point, working into the packed clay.

The surveyor appeared at a run from the direction of the comms post, head down, one hand on her collar. She did not stop to speak. There were things to be weighed down, secured, kept dry.

I stood at the hedgerow with the parcel under my arm and the notebook against my chest. The absent witness was somewhere east of here, had been absent for both readings, and the relay had not yet happened. The parcel was still sealed. The entry in the notebook was still one line.

Lano pressed closer, ears flat, watching the masts bend.

The generator flickered again.
