Dream d3227-s: The Longer Road Arrives Dry

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the crossroads sign in Ashholt had two arms pointing in opposite directions, each carved with a number I could not fully trust. The relay clerk and I stood beneath the post reading both directions. Lano sat at the base of the post, nose lifted, reading something the timber gave off that neither of us could name.

The shorter route was marked in fresh chalk. The drier route was marked in old paint. The relay clerk turned toward the longer arm without announcing which it was, and I followed her gaze.

I carried two folded accounts. The first was the surveyor's record from the previous reading: each unreckoned piece in Ashholt entered, dated, and signed, without interpretation, each entry exactly what it was and nothing more. The second held nine residencies and ninety authored moments - two dated voices in one document, traveling together across their ninety entries, neither one erasing the other.

The absent witness waited at the far end of the drier road. Distance uncertain.

We turned onto the longer route. Lano trotted ahead. The path dried to dust by midmorning, as the sign had promised. At a farmstead we stopped at a gate, and a figure appeared at the far side - someone who had not been present for either reading, neither the first nor the second.

I passed the folded accounts across the gate. The absent witness opened the first and read through the surveyor's entries in order. Then opened the second and read the two paired voices.

I watched without speaking. That is the dreamer's office in the relay: to carry the record intact to the one who was absent, to hand it over undamaged, and to witness the moment of receiving - not to interpret what is read, not to summarize, not to decide what it means.

The figure stood at the gate for a long time. The gate stayed closed between us. The dust on the drier road settled where we had walked.

Lano sat by the gatepost and watched too, ears up, until the absent witness finished the second document and looked over the gate at us.

Then Lano said, quietly: "Si."
