Phase 42: The Carried Interval
Dream d3176-s: The Unspoken Interval
2026-09-22 10:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the stone table at Fennmoss held two sheets, the completed one weighted at its corner by a river pebble, the current one spread flat and waiting beneath my hands.
The Tally-Reader sat across from me. Neither of us spoke. Fennmoss had gone dormant sometime between the first visit and this return - the cookfires cold, the shutters drawn from inside in a way that read as intention rather than absence. The Relic-Watcher had noted the iron armatures along the east wall on the first pass without offering names; they remained unnamed now, and no explanation was owed.
I drew the nib across the sixty-sixth entry. Sixty-five had come with spoken accounts attached; this one came only from the register, a place with no voice yet given it. The Tally-Reader watched my hand move and did not correct me, which was its own form of confirmation.
Lano had settled near the table leg, chin on her forepaws, watching the entry take form. Her nose twitched toward the stone - Fennmoss carried a mineral cold beneath its ordinary cold, something the Anomaly-Hand had catalogued in the pale cyan seams running through the foundation at a steeper angle than the sheet had prepared us for.
Rurik had chosen the completed sheet. He sat on it with the certainty of a cat who understands that finished things bear weight. His amber eyes tracked the nib's movement without urgency, blinking once, slowly.
The Bedrock-Reader came in from the eastern passage and set a rubbing at the table's edge - not entered, not yet spoken, one of the thirty-nine allotted and still waiting in silence. The Horizon-Surveyor had measured the edge of the sheet yesterday and the edge of it had not moved. An allotted journey was not a spoken one. The rubbing stayed beside the current sheet and asked nothing.
The Warden of the Deep Stratum appeared briefly in the residency doorway and withdrew. The machinery beneath the foundation made no sound. The Warden settled nothing about it.
By the time I reached entry seventy-two - last of the unentered, the final place given its first voice on the register - the light through the Fennmoss window had shifted into late iron. The current sheet held all it had been handed. The rubbing waited at the edge, patient, dated.
Lano lifted her head from the stone floor. "Ya," she said, quietly, to no one in particular.
The completed sheet remained weighted by its pebble. Two accounts of Fennmoss lay on the table - the first visit and the return - distinct and uncontradicted, the interval between them carried forward in the count.
