Dream d3175-s: Silt Receives the Line

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we stood at the edge of Fennmoss in the hour before the bank firmed.

The mud was the color of old iron. It gave slightly underfoot - not enough to swallow a boot, just enough to register weight. The Bedrock-Reader had drawn the chalk line at first light, pressing the stick flat along the survey datum, pulling it west to east across the exposed face of the bank. Now we watched. The left end had already softened.

Rurik sat back on a root shelf above the mud, amber eyes fixed on the dissolving end. His tail hung still. He watched the way a cat watches something it will not touch - with complete attention and no intention of acting.

Lano padded the perimeter of our position, nose low, tracking the scent of the cold stratum. She stopped at the western edge where the chalk had first begun to go, sniffed once, and sat.

The Anomaly-Hand moved along the bank face and crouched to read the pale cyan seams where the emission had been logged before. The seams were still present. Nothing had moved in them. The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood back, both hands at their sides, logging without instruments - the kind of logging that is only memory, only presence.

The Relic-Watcher kept their eyes on the iron armature half-buried at the bank's lower edge. The tide of silt had risen two finger-widths since the previous visit. Not submerged. Still visible. Still silent.

The Horizon-Surveyor turned and measured the line where the sheet ended, not speaking the number.

The Tally-Reader said nothing. They do not round.

The chalk line continued to dissolve from its left end. The right end held. I watched the Bedrock-Reader watching it - the way you watch something you have measured before and cannot re-measure in the same moment it is being erased. There is a patience in that posture that is not peace. It is something older.

Lano gave a single low sound and pressed her side against my leg. I did not move.

The bank did not speak. Fennmoss does not speak. It holds what it was given and releases it in its own sequence, without announcing the order. We are the ones who came back. The interval is what lies between the two visits, and we were carrying it now, present in it, watching the right end of the line hold while the left end returned to the mud.

Rurik blinked once, slow, and looked away toward the interior.

The record remained open.
