Dream d3148-s: Interval at the Mouth

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the bread was already on the ledge when we entered the kiln court.

The Tally-Reader moved first along the outer wall, counting the iron stanchions set into the fired brick at intervals. The Bedrock-Reader pressed a palm to the paving stone nearest the flue and was still for a long moment, reading whatever gradient lived beneath it. I walked the court's center line and marked the shadow cast by the chimney flue against the hour.

Rurik had found the high rim of the flue housing and sat there, amber eyes half-lidded, watching the court below with the slow attention of something that has already decided nothing will move without his knowledge.

Lano padded along the kiln's base, nose low, pausing at each join in the brickwork. She stopped at the corner furthest from the gate and sat, ears forward.

The bread was a dark loaf, scored across the top, set on the stone ledge at the kiln's lower mouth. I noted it when we arrived and passed the observation to the Relic-Watcher to log. The Relic-Watcher wrote the position and the shape and nothing further about it.

The attendant came from the western passage. A short figure in cloth the color of brick run for years - not ash, not red, but the exact middle tone of long continuous heat. No introduction. They lifted the bread by its underside, cradled it against the front of their body, and turned back into the western passage. The gate sound was small.

The kiln stayed as it was.

The Anomaly-Hand marked the pale cyan seam running up the left jamb of the mouth - a thread of cold color the bread had been partially obscuring. The Warden of the Deep Stratum noted the seam in the log without settling any explanation for it. The Horizon-Surveyor completed the far measurement and brought the reading back to the center of the court.

I did not know if the bread had been placed for us or had always been part of the kiln's own keeping. The interval between setting and taking is not mine to reckon.

Rurik dropped from the flue rim to the court floor without sound and sat in the cleared space where the bread had been, washing one paw with unhurried attention.

The count held at six witnessed visits. The ledge held nothing.
