Phase 42: The Carried Interval
Dream d3147-s: Footprints End at the Sky
2026-09-20 09:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the walkway had already taken the night's record before we arrived. A line of smaller prints crossed the riveted plate from the north anchor to the open edge, each one a pale oval pressed into condensate, ending at the sky with nothing after. The Tally-Reader counted them without speaking. The Anomaly-Hand crouched at the seam where plate met bracket and traced the faint cyan there, a hairline, no wider than a scratch.
Lano walked the line of prints, nose dropping to each one in sequence. Then she stopped. Her ears went flat against her head.
The sound came half a second later. Not a bang. A settling, deep in the eastern foundation block, the kind of sound that belongs underground and had risen. The Bedrock-Reader turned immediately, not running but moving with the particular economy of someone who has heard old ground give an answer it was not asked for. I felt the walkway plate oscillate once beneath my feet and gripped the handrope.
Below us, on the street side, a section of the old-network wall folded. Not a catastrophic fall. A lean, and then a grinding, and then a quarter of the upper course went inward, taking a cable run with it. The cables were thick, pre-settlement orange rubber, and they drew taut before snapping, each snap its own event with a pause between them.
Lano barked once, sharp and flat.
The Warden of the Deep Stratum was already at the eastern tower anchor, palms flat against the base plate, reading the metal's vibration. He did not touch the bolts. The Relic-Watcher stepped back from the edge and opened the log. The Horizon-Surveyor looked along the far edge of the surveyed sheet, where the mapped territory ended, and measured something the rest of us could not yet see.
The wall section had stopped. Its angle did not look temporary.
Rurik had been at the south anchor all morning. Now he pressed himself low against the iron base of the tower, amber eyes fixed on the leaning wall, very still. He did not go toward it. He did not go away from it.
The Tally-Reader finished his count and wrote the number in the margin beside the footprint sketch. The prints ended where the metal ended. The severed cables hung in the cold morning air below us, their loose ends turning slowly, and the wall held its new position and did not explain itself, and nothing in Cindergreen was quiet in the way it had been quiet an hour before.
