Dream d3144-s: Bread Beside the Sealed Mouth

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the kiln chamber held its warmth without any fire visible, the door sealed flush against a pale iron surround. The stone walls were slate-grey, the grouting cold except where the cyan seams caught low light and glowed faintly at knee height along the north face.

We had not been in this exact recess before. The Anomaly-Hand counted seven seams in this alcove, two more than in the passage outside, and made a mark in the margin beside that number without speaking.

An attendant I had not seen in the previous account stepped forward from behind a low arch — not one of our party, dressed in plain cloth, carrying a cloth-covered board. They set it on the slate ledge beside the kiln door: a round loaf, dense, still warm from some other oven. Not from the sealed one. The door had not been opened. The attendant withdrew without looking back.

The Relic-Watcher observed the bread, then observed the door, then wrote nothing. There was nothing to name.

Lano moved toward the loaf and stopped a full step away from it. She sat, ears forward, nose working slowly. She did not touch it. After a moment she padded around the base of the kiln, sniffing the lower stone where heat gathered, and came back to sit between the Tally-Reader's feet. Her tail moved once.

Rurik had taken the highest ledge before we were fully inside, a narrow shelf where the vault began to curve. He watched the attendant leave. His tail was still. After the footsteps had gone he turned his face toward the sealed door and stared at it, unblinking, for a long interval.

The Horizon-Surveyor measured the width of the chamber at its widest — nine paces — and added this to the sheet.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood at the kiln's side and pressed one palm briefly to the iron surround. They did not record whether it was warm.

The Bedrock-Reader crouched near the floor and traced a visible seam in the paving, a line of different stone running to the base of the kiln and stopping there. They said nothing about where it came from.

The bread remained. No one touched it. The kiln door did not change.

Lano's ears lifted toward the iron. She let out one small sound: "calor."
