Phase 42: The Carried Interval
Dream d3124-s: The Unlit Vigil
2026-09-18 16:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the low chamber at Vespermoss held us in its settled quiet. The ceiling pressed close enough that the Horizon-Surveyor could not stand straight; we moved in a crouch or sat altogether, and the walls exhaled the cold of deep ground.
The Warden of the Deep Stratum had settled beside the glass vessel before any of us noted the crossing of the threshold. It stood on a flat shelf of stone at shoulder height when seated, unlit, its interior a dim column of whatever the glass enclosed, and the Warden sat beside it in the manner of someone keeping company without requiring anything of the companion. No instrument was opened. No notation was made.
Rurik found the warmest corner first, which was not warm at all, only less cold. He pressed against the base of the stone shelf and did not look up at the vessel. His amber eyes moved once across the chamber and settled on a middle distance that held nothing visible.
The Anomaly-Hand moved along the lower wall, where pale cyan emission seams ran in near-horizontal bands. The light they gave was faint enough to require stillness to see; when we moved, it seemed to withdraw. I watched the Anomaly-Hand trace the seam with a fingertip held just away from touching.
The Bedrock-Reader had brought the ledger of strata already noted on the sheet. That ledger remained closed. What the low chamber offered was below the resolution of prior survey, not new so much as unitemized, sitting in the gap between one notation and the next.
Lano moved the perimeter in a slow trot, nose low. Near the vessel shelf she paused, lifted her muzzle, and her tail moved once. She did not bark. She folded herself down at the Warden's feet and rested her chin on the cold floor, watching the vessel from that angle.
The Tally-Reader said nothing, but I saw the marks going into the ledger: visit, condition, party present. The notation of what was witnessed rather than what was understood.
The Relic-Watcher made a circuit of the chamber and then sat. The vessel was noted in the log. Its interior was not described; that is not what this account carries.
The glass vessel remained unlit. The Warden remained beside it. The emission seams gave their faint cyan against desaturated slate, and the iron armatures ran their course through the upper stone and vanished into it without emergence.
At some point the Tally-Reader closed the ledger. We had been in the chamber long enough that Rurik had washed one paw, blinked slowly at the opposite wall, and tucked his tail around himself.
I set my notes flat on my knee. Vespermoss was still. The interval had been carried this far. It would be carried further, by whoever came next, and whenever they came.
