Dream d3114-s: The Slow Meniscus

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the shelter chamber had a low ceiling scored with soot lines from fires that had gone out before any of us arrived. We entered from the east face, where the threshold stone sat lower than expected - Rurik went first, slipping through the gap between the door-frame and its own warped frame, his tail the last thing visible before he found the dark interior.

The bowls were arranged in a row along the south-facing ledge. Seven of them. Clay, perhaps, or some composite that had taken on clay's color over time. They held liquid at different depths: the leftmost nearly brimming, the rightmost showing only a pale skin of moisture at its base. The arrangement carried no obvious logic of diminishing order.

The Tally-Reader crouched at the near end of the row, not touching. The Anomaly-Hand moved along the opposite wall, where pale cyan threads ran in the stone - thin as a thumbnail's width, brighter where the mortar had crumbled away. The Bedrock-Reader knelt by the floor and ran two fingers across a seam where the chamber's foundation met older bedrock. The Relic-Watcher stood at the center of the room, observing everything without moving toward any one thing.

Lano padded slowly down the length of the row. She did not disturb the bowls. Her nose worked the air above each one in turn. At the fourth bowl she paused, nostrils flickering. A small sound at the back of her throat. Then she continued to the end and sat.

"Cuatro," she said, barely audible.

The Horizon-Surveyor looked up from the east aperture, where she had been reading the angle of light against the far scarp. The Warden of the Deep Stratum remained still near the rear of the chamber, watching the ventilation shaft overhead, which ran at an angle none of us had seen in the foundation maps.

Rurik had taken the highest point in the room: a ledge above the south wall, just below ceiling level. He lay there with his amber eyes half-closed, watching the row of bowls. His tail moved once, slowly, and stilled.

I noted the unequal fills in the record but offered no count. The Tally-Reader would carry that. The bowls did not ask to be measured; they only held what they held.

The Relic-Watcher ran no instrument along the ledge surface. The Warden named nothing. The Anomaly-Hand traced the cyan seam to its terminus at a corbel stone and stopped there.

We stayed until the light shifted and the soot lines on the ceiling became distinct again. Then we moved out through the same east threshold, Rurik leaping down without sound, Lano last, her ears turning once toward the bowls before she followed.
