Dream d3113-s: The Wheel's Blind Moment

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cliff terrace at Kestrelfall held its second morning without ceremony. The stone wheel hung from its iron armature above the scarp edge, and in the pool left by the tide-mist below, a disc of sky lay flat and grey beneath it. Nothing had moved since we arrived.

The Anomaly-Hand crouched at the far fracture line where pale cyan leaked from the cold slate. The Relic-Watcher stood nearby, recording by shape and dimension only, never naming.

I walked the margin where the terrace met the drop. Lano came beside me, nose down, reading what the stone had gathered in the night. Her tail lifted twice, then stilled. She stopped at the edge of the slate and sat, watching the pool below with an attention I could not match.

Rurik had found the high place where the armature bolts met the cliff face. He sat between the two iron brackets, amber eyes fixed on the wheel's lower rim, blinking slow.

The Tally-Reader announced, without inflection: thirty-one paces to the end of the current sheet.

The Horizon-Surveyor moved to the eastern lip and took the measurement in silence. The Bedrock-Reader knelt at the terrace join and pressed one palm flat to read whatever the strata held beneath.

Then a cloud crossed.

The pool's reflection vanished under the cloud's belly, and in that instant the wheel turned. Not freely. One notch. A sound like a tooth settling into a ratchet - felt through the feet more than heard - traveled up through the terrace stone and into everything standing on it.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum opened the log, wrote one entry, and closed it.

Lano looked up from the slate. "Quieto," she said, barely above the wind.

Rurik blinked once and turned his gaze from the wheel toward the cliff interior.

I knelt beside the Anomaly-Hand and looked at the seam together. The pale cyan had neither brightened nor dimmed. The interval was recorded. The wheel held its new position.

We stayed until the cloud had passed and the reflection returned to the pool below. The wheel did not move again.
