Dream d3078-s: Pale Seams in Gravel Light

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the antennas of Ospreyhush stood at our backs as we descended the winding trail at dawn. The gravel valley below was vast and colorless in the early light, and our boots scraped the loose stone in a rhythm that matched nothing but itself.

Lano led the way down, nose close to the path, tail low and swinging. Rurik had gone ahead at the first switchback, vanishing into a crease in the rock wall, then reappearing further down as if the descent cost him nothing.

The Tally-Reader said: the surveyed sheet holds 127. Fifty-four entered by walking. Seventy-three still unreached. Past the valley floor, none of those numbers apply.

We had all heard this before the first step.

The Bedrock-Reader crouched once on the path and pressed a palm to the stone. She said nothing. She rose and continued.

Where the trail leveled onto a gravel apron at the base of the first cliff, the Anomaly-Hand stopped and pointed at the rock face. A pale cyan seam ran diagonally from shoulder height down into the scree - thin as a knife-cut, faintly luminous even in the growing daylight. The Relic-Watcher noted it without speaking. No one named it. It was a fact, not a puzzle.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum walked the perimeter of a half-buried iron armature at the apron's edge. Its form suggested something that once stood upright and rotated. Now it listed into the gravel at a shallow angle, and the gravel had grown around its base in slow decades. She did not settle on a function for it.

The Horizon-Surveyor looked south along the valley floor and said: that ridge is the end of the sheet. Beyond it, unrecorded.

Lano trotted past the armature and sniffed its base, then moved on. Rurik sat on the highest remaining bolt-head and watched the valley with amber eyes until we had all passed him, then dropped in a single fluid motion to the gravel and resumed his own path.

The antennas of Ospreyhush were no longer visible above the ridge behind us when we reached the valley floor. The cold of the ancient bedrock came up through the gravel at our feet. Ahead, the unreckoned stratum stretched without a boundary mark.

The Tally-Reader kept the count. She did not round it up.
