Dream d3045-s: The Pulse Below Reckoning

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the floor of Slatemoss opened below the cellars into a chamber the survey had not reached.

The descent was six steps cut into raw slate, then a ceiling low enough to require stooping. The Bedrock-Reader went first, one hand trailing the wall. I followed, and behind me came the soft fall of paws: Lano, ears forward, nose already working the cold air before the lamp did. Rurik slipped past us both in the dark and was simply present at the far end of the chamber when the light found him, amber eyes catching it before anything else did.

The seam ran along the floor in a rough diagonal, perhaps four metres, no wider than a thumb pressed flat. It pulsed. Not flickering, not glowing. Pulsing - a period, a pause, a period - exact and unhurried, the way a buried thing holds its own measure. The Anomaly-Hand knelt beside it and held a palm flat above it without touching and said nothing.

I noted the temperature: the air near the seam was colder, not warmer. The Relic-Watcher wrote this down. I watched her write it.

Lano approached from the side, nose low, and stopped at perhaps thirty centimetres. Her tail did not move. She sat and her eyes tracked one specific point along the seam - not the whole length, a point - as though something there differed from the rest. She made a sound low in her throat, one word: "Quieto."

Rurik had taken a ledge of raised slate at chest height and watched without blinking. When the Tally-Reader read the count aloud - one seam, one chamber, four walls, no ingress beyond the six steps - Rurik flicked his tail once and looked to the ceiling.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood at the perimeter and made no notes during the observation. When we were done she said the seam had no designation in the old ledgers and she would not assign one tonight. The Horizon-Surveyor agreed: a feature without a place on the survey sheet could not be added to the sheet. It would be held in a separate column, pending a second observation.

We left it pulsing in the dark.
