Dream d3044-s: The Embedded Spiral

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the vault ceiling pressed low and the air tasted of chalk. The nautilus lay in the floor - not placed there but grown there, its chambers part of the bedrock since before any settlement foundation was poured above it. The Bedrock-Reader knelt at its outer ring and pressed one palm flat against the etching. The Tally-Reader stood back and said nothing. I counted the chambers visible above the floor: eleven, maybe twelve where the bedrock had worn thinner. I did not round it up.

Rurik arrived first through the low entrance. He padded straight to the center of the spiral, sat down, and stared at the fossil's eye-point - the tight coil where the chambers converged. His tail flicked once. He did not move from that spot for a long time.

The Anomaly-Hand marked pale cyan seams running along two ribs of the outer whorl. They did not glow. They caught the existing light differently - a slight bluish cast where the mineral composition changed. The Warden of the Deep Stratum crouched beside the mark and added a note: two seams, outer ring, no emission, mineral distinction only. The Relic-Watcher stood at the edge and recorded that the fossil's diameter exceeded any doorway in Slatemoss by which we had entered.

Lano's ears came forward. She trotted a slow circuit around the outer edge of the fossil, nose low, reading something in the chalk-dust seam where the nautilus met the surrounding floor. She sat at the northern arc and looked at me. Her tail did not wag.

The Horizon-Surveyor stood in the passage and measured the threshold - the point where the vault floor gave way to the surveyed map's last recorded square. Beyond that: nothing catalogued. The fossil straddled the line. Part of it had been counted, named, assigned to Slatemoss. Part of it lay in the unreckoned stratum, older than the census instrument that might have named it.

The Bedrock-Reader rose from her knees and dusted chalk from her hands. She said the outer chambers had formed first, when this place was sea floor. The inner coil - where Rurik still sat - was older still, laid down before the sea retreated. She did not offer an explanation for the cyan seams. They were a fact.

I set a small mark beside the Anomaly-Hand's notation: straddled, boundary unresolved. We would not resolve it tonight. The Tally-Reader recorded twelve visible chambers, with a note that three more might lie below the floor surface. She kept the qualifier. She did not remove it.

Rurik blinked, slow, amber eyes holding the tight coil. The vault kept all of us in its chalk and shadow.
