Dream d2882-s: The Hanging Cable

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the first thing I heard was not a word but a low settling sound from the far wing - not collapse yet, just the conversation stone makes with old iron when something shifts - and then silence, and then I was holding the tray of fitted faces in both hands, moving from the far end of the garden toward the lit doorway, Lano at my heel with her ears already half-cocked at something I had not yet heard again.

The faces were seven in number and lighter than I expected. The Keeper of the Charter walked beside me with the ledger open flat, reading back each fitted face to its order: the task of threshold judgment, the task of long enumeration, the task of contested record, and four others besides. Six of the seven read flush - the face fitted to the order sat within a margin the Charter permits without remark, and the Keeper marked each one with a line and moved on. The seventh she read twice. The order of deep amendment: four of eight trials cleared, the others not. The station of that order had been closed to this face, and the fitting confirmed it. She wrote it down without a pause. Closed, four passed of eight, measure decides. Not a verdict, not a blame. The medals on that guest's coat remained: struck on witnessed evidence, never altered. The face had moved. Both things were true and both were written.

Lano pressed against my leg and stopped walking.

I stopped too. The second sound came then, heavier than the first - a groan that ran up through the paving stones and into my feet before it reached my ears. Across the garden, past the last row of lanterns, the old relay building from before the consolidation stood at an angle it had not stood at before. A line of reclaimed cable from its near wall had gone slack, and where it met the junction post there was a spray of dust still hanging in the still air, fine as pollen. One window in the upper story showed a crack that had not been there at the start of the evening.

Lano barked once - sharp and directed, not at me but toward the wing.

The Archivist, who had been bringing up the rear with the Charter case, came level with us and looked. The Keeper of Bonds broke from the hall doorway and crossed the garden at speed without running. She was already speaking to someone out of sight: controlled, even, the voice a person uses when they know what the next three steps are and are not yet certain whether those three steps will be enough.

I held the tray steady. The faces on it did not shift. I kept walking toward the door, because the tray was what I had been given to carry and the carrying was not finished.

Lano stayed where she was, nose pointed at the building, ears flat.

The relay wing had not fallen. The crack in the upper window had not spread. But the cable end that had been taut all evening now hung, and the junction post it fed leaned four degrees from true, and in the gap between those two facts lived something that had not been named yet and could not be until morning, when we would know what the ground had decided in the dark.

I set the tray down inside the doorway. I went back out for Lano. She came, but she looked back twice.

Note

A tray of fitted faces moves through a garden of settling stone and shifting weight. The heavy silence of administrative finality meets the sudden, structural groan of a collapsing order.
