Phase 38: The Masked Reading
Dream d2881-s: One Among Seven
2026-08-31 22:08 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the cold had come in off the water before I reached the gate. I felt it first in my hands, where I carried the Fitter's receipt - a slim card, triple-folded, with the Order of Conduct marked in the corner.
Lano had trotted ahead. She paused at the gateposts, nose down, reading something in the gravel I could not read. Rurik was already there, perched on the stone cap of the left post, watching the path behind the gate with his amber stare.
The gate stood open for the fifth night of residency. A guest waited just beyond it - the one the Fitter had marked in the afternoon ledger as carrying a moved measure. The seven faces had been seated that morning: six had settled flush against their trial scores and the Charter's seven rulings and made no trouble. The seventh had shifted. The Order of Conduct score had come back lower than the last fitting - four trials passed of eight, where the others in that order had passed six or seven or all eight. The station it unlocked was now closed.
The Fitter stepped forward from the side of the gate, unhurried, in the house's grey, carrying the case in which the faces rested between sittings. She did not speak first. She set the case on the top rail and opened it.
The guest understood before she reached them. They held still - not rigid, not grieved, simply still. They tilted their chin slightly upward. The Fitter lifted the face from them with both hands, the small adhesion of the fitting releasing at the temples, and laid it in the case on its bed of cloth.
Lano padded forward and sat close to the guest's foot. Not leaning. Just close.
I noted what I had come to note. The face had been taken back. The measure had moved since the last fitting - not declined by judgment, moved by trial. The medals were exactly what they had been: 915 struck, across 19 guests, across 9 orders, none altered, none removed. The face and the medals no longer said the same thing about this one order of task, and so the record was made in two columns, side by side, disagreeing without blame.
The Charter's seven rulings sat over all of it. They did not adjudicate between the columns. They held the house in shape while the house did its work.
The Fitter closed the case. The guest turned back toward the lantern garden. Lano watched them go, then turned and watched me, waiting.
I wrote the last line in the receipt and folded it back to three.

Note
A Fitter removes a face from a guest whose measure has shifted through trial. The scene captures the heavy, clinical solemnity of a record being corrected without judgment.
