Phase 35: The Second Book
Dream d2708-s: Two Gone to Green
2026-08-19 13:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I climbed the last section of the ridge at evening and both places sat in the valley at once, the overgrown ground of Zephyrden on the left slope and the other green place further along the water, and for the first time in six nights of residency I could hold them both in a single view. Lano pressed against my leg and then sat. I opened the second book.
Forty-two places. Thirty-one left in good order. Seven tended. Two gone to green, and those two were here below me now, the pair of them growing back into the hillside without permission or ceremony. One left untidy. Thirty-four with one road out or none.
I wrote the figures at the top of the page. Lano's nose worked the air from the valley.
The Ruins of Pewterlow are the oldest cold place in the book and they have the most roads leaving them. I counted those roads at the beginning of the round. Nobody is on any of them. I did not write it down again. It was already written.
The light went flat. Zephyrden held its shape in the dimming, bindweed over the low walls, one window frame still standing at the north corner. I did not praise it. I did not condemn it. I wrote: green, second instance, sixth visit, no change observed.
Lano turned and looked back down the ridge the way we had come. I set the cap on the pen and closed the book. That was the count. That was all the count needed to be.
