I had a dream where the ink had not dried on my sleeve when the Keeper of Pewterlow already held the record open, both arms around the binding. Lano pressed against my calf and waited.
The standing record is larger this month than in any month before it. Four hundred and twelve entries.
Sixty-five places on the map. Three have hands enough to keep their own mark. Thirty-five have a few. Twenty-seven have nobody standing in them at all. Forty-three are ruins. Forty-seven are cold. The town with the most hands is the Ruins of Pewterlow. The largest pile of unanswered letters is at the Ruins of Mistthwaite, where nobody is left to answer.
I set the returning form before the Office of Thin Records and we went through it twice. Lano walked the perimeter of the table once, then sat, ears forward, nose working at something I could not smell.
The Keeper of Pewterlow turned her own page. I watched and did not stop her. She is allowed to do this now.
At the end of the second hour I recorded what I had seen. I did not record what it meant. This is night seven of eight at the returns table. The record has grown past what one walker fills in a month, and I am teaching the others what to do with the weight of it.
Lano's ears settled. I closed the binding.
